Ghani also attacked another family member and became violent to his own mother when she tried to intervene.

The defendant then said he was going to get a knife and stab his partner.

He followed her out into the street with the weapon and continued to shout and swear at her.

Ghani then went to confront his neighbour when he complained about the noise.

He went up to the property and kicked the front door.

A passer-by tried to calm Ghani down but he raised the knife above his head.

Miss Pearson said the man was terrified and feared he would be stabbed.

Police arrived as crowds gathered in the street to watch the incident.

Ghani refused to put the weapon down and the officers had to use batons and Pava spray as they detained him.

Ghani eventually let go of the knife as three officers held him down and another managed to take it out of his grip.

He pleaded guilty to affray, making threats with a bladed article and three offences of common assault.

Satpal Roth-Sharma, mitigating, said Ghani has no previous convictions and had pleaded guilty to the offences at an early stage.

The barrister said Ghani was a regular user of cocaine.

She added: "He states that when he is under the influence of drugs he becomes angry and acts out of character.

"This episode escalated beyond his control but it was not premeditated."

Ms Roth-Sharma said Ghani had mental health problems which would not be addressed while he was in custody.
