A burglar caused £1,400 worth of damage to steal a bottle of prosecco during a break-in at a pizza bar during lockdown.

Lee Taylor was locked up for 18 months over the burglary at the Yorkshire Deli and Pizza Bar in Wakefield city centre.

Leeds Crown Court heard the 39-year-old targeted the empty premises during the night of April 12 this year.

Taylor has a previous conviction for a burglary at the same business premises.

The defendant entered the property through the roof and caused extensive damage before taking a bottle of prosecco.

Taylor, of Drury Lane, Wakefield, pleaded guilty to burglary.

He was out of prison on licence at the time of the offence.

James Littlehales, mitigating, said Taylor carried out the burglary when he was homeless after being released from jail.

Sentencing Taylor, Judge Rodney Jameson QC said: "You have caused substantial economic loss.

"You were homeless and I accept that that might be the case.

"There are agencies there to assist people upon release.

"It really is your responsibility to try to co-operate with the services they offer.

"You broke in to these premises not for the first time.

"You caused substantial damage and a great deal of upset to the business, particularly at this difficult time for them."
