Leeds news LIVE: Throstle Road, Middleton closed as police cordon remains on Thorpe Road after incident

Ongoing police incident

A very large police cordon is in place on Thorpe Road, with officers guarding the scene.

The cordon stretches from the junctions with Acre Road and Acre Mount and extends onto Thorpe View.

The road is closed to all traffic and pedestrians and officers are directing people away from the area.

We are awaiting updates from West Yorkshire Police on this serious incident.

A resident who wishes to remain anonymous said: “We heard the sirens and saw flashing lights speed past just before we put the kids to bed, around 9pm.

“The police put up the cordon and wouldn’t let any residents through.

“This area has a bit of a fearsome reputation but we feel safe here. Things happen all over - when I lived in Horsforth incidents like would happen there too.”

Throstle Road, Middleton remains closed.

First Bus has advised routes for those travelling near or through the area.

The Yorkshire Evening Post and its sister titles across the UK today challenge Boris Johnson to ensure that every citizen is only a short walk away from a vaccine centre.

Experts have said that dozens of small and medium-sized pharmacies in Leeds could be utilised to speed up the coronavirus vaccination rollout.

A Leeds chemist is willing to administer the vaccine: "Our customers are asking all the time, all the time. They are asking lots of questions and asking us 'if you get some will you please let us know'".

Office for National Statistics figures show there are around 160 pharmacies in Leeds.
