Leeds man ordered to pay £3,000 compensation to pub doorman for attacking him at Union Bank pub in Wakefield

Darren Vickers was given a suspended prison sentence over the assault at Union Bank, Westgate, Wakefield, on Boxing Day last year.

Leeds Crown Court was shown CCTV footage of the violence which happened after Vickers had been ejected from the premises along with others.

The 30-year-old was caught on camera outside the pub as staff were ejecting another man from the premises.

The defendant approached the victim without warning and punched him to the face as he was unable to defend himself.

The doorman suffered a broken nose and a fractured eye socket. He also lost a tooth the day after the incident.

The court heard the victim did not require surgery but had to attend at least 14 hospital appointments after the incident.

He has been unable to work as a doorman since and has struggled to find other employmenyt.

The victim, a keen boxer, has also been unable to take part in sporting activities due to the injuries.

Vickers, of Thirlmere Gardens, Beeston, Leeds, was identified after the CCTV footage was used in a Facebook appeal.

He pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm.

Richard Canning, mitigating, said Vickers has no previous convictions.

Mr Canning said his client had lost his well-paid job running a bank after his employer was sent the CCTV footage by the defendant's former partner.

The barrister said Vickers was now working on the tills for Sports Direct.

Mr Canning said Vickers committed the offence when he was undergoing stress from problems in his personal life and he is unlikely to offend ever again.

Vickers was given a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months.

He was also ordered to pay £3,000 compensation to the victim.

Vickers must do 100 hours of unpaid work and take part in 15 rehabilitation activity requirement days.

Judge Simon Phillips QC said: "This was an entirely unprovoked attack on him and it was clear that there was some degree of premeditation on your behalf.

"The courts from time to time have to deal with similar incidents where a single punch has resulted in a fatality."
