Police stopped the Audi that Alistair Reid was driving on California Drive in Castleford at around 4pm on June 23, Leeds Crown Court was told.

Officers smelled cannabis and searched the car.

Joseph Bell, prosecuting, said police found a cannabis joint and a black rucksack containing cannabis, scales and a cannabis grinder.

Mr Bell said later that day, officers searched 31-year-old Reid's home address and found more cannabis.

The court heard the prosecution did not have any information on the quantities of cannabis found by police.

Mr Bell said Reid admitted the offence in an interview and told officers that his partner had baked cannabis into baked goods and he sold them on.

Reid, of Cedar Court, Woodlesford, Leeds, admitted possessing cannabis with intent to supply.

Ian Hudson, mitigating, said Reid had lost his job before committing the offence and sold cannabis to fund his own habit.

The court heard Reid later found work.

A probation officer told the court: "He is working 50 hours a week."

Judge Christopher Batty told Reid: "We are in a different world at the moment. You are working and can support your family legitimately.

"I'm going to take an exceptional course. I'm not going to send you to custody immediately."

Judge Batty handed Reid an eight month jail sentence, suspended for 18 months plus 200 hours of unpaid work.
