Leeds burglars had to abandon getaway car at house after disturbing owner as they used car jack to break into garage

Two burglars were caught after they had to abandoned their car at a house in Leeds when they disturbed the homeowner as they broke into a garage.

Padraic Tolan and Adam Savage fled on foot after police were called to the property in the early hours of the morning.

Leeds Crown Court heard the pair managed to get away from police but were stopped in another vehicle half an hour later.

Stephen Littlewood, prosecuting, said officers stopped the vehicle at 2am on April 3, 2019.

The car contained wet and muddy clothing they had been wearing during the raid.

The homeowner had raised the alarm after seeing three men trying to get into the garage outside the property.

Two of the men used a car jack to remove panels in order to get inside the building as the other man acted as look-out.

The court heard Savage was on bail at the time of the offence for vehicle theft.

The 20-year-old was arrested on September 12, 2018, from a vehicle stolen during a burglary at a house on Manston Gardens, Cross Gates.

Mr Littlewood said a rear patio door had been smashed at the property and keys to a car were stolen before it was driven away.

Savage drove off in the car as police arrived.

He abandoned the vehicle nearby but was arrested when members of the public pointed him out to police officers.

Savage threw a purse stolen from the house and car keys into a garden but they were recovered.

Savage, of Torre Gardens, Burmantofts, pleaded guilty to burglary and theft of a vehicle.

Tolan, 32, of Haigh Moor Avenue, Tingley, pleaded guilty to burglary.

The court heard neither defendant had been in trouble since the burglary.

Mr Berry said Savage had mental health and behavioural difficulties and presented as being immature when interviewed about the offending.

Probation officer Malcolm Brown said Tolan has no previous convictions for burglary and had been assessed as a low risk of re offending.

Savage was given an 18-month sentence, suspended for 18 months.

He was ordered to complete 20 rehabilitation activity requirement days and was banned from driving for 12 months.

Tolan was given a 14-month sentence, suspended for 18 months. He was ordered to complete ten rehabilitation activity requirement days plus 100 hours of unpaid work.

Judge Christopher Batty said: "You both must understand that going into people's houses is very serious. Joint offences are serious offences of its type and there was quite a lot of planning going into it.

"Had you come immediately before the court for sentence then maybe I would not do what I'm going to do today."
