Leeds 'bully' jailed for kicking and punching his partner in drunken attack months after being spared prison sentence for domestic violence

Simon Warvill carried out the attack while he was the subject of a suspended prison for fracturing the woman's breastbone in a previous domestic attack.

Warvill, 43, of Nowell Avenue, Harehills, was jailed for nine months for his latest offence which took place on January 18 this year.

Leeds Crown Court heard the attack happened at 10.30pm as the woman lay in bed.

Warvill, who had been drinking heavily, kicked his partner repeatedly until she fell out of the bed onto the floor.

The defendant then punched the woman in the face repeatedly and said: "You are a stupid idiot. It is your fault."

The victim managed to phone her brother and he contacted police.

He later claimed he could not recall the attack because he was so drunk.

Joseph Bell, prosecuting, said the victim suffered bruising to her arms, a split lip and bumps to the back of her head.

Mr Bell said Warvill and the woman had been in a relationship for six years, which she described as "awful."

The prosecutor read a victim statement to the court on the woman's behalf.

She described having severe pain to her back in the days after the attack.

The woman described how Warvill's offending had an emotional as well as a physical impact upon her.

Warvill was the subject of a suspended sentence order at the time over an attack on the same victim in which he caused injuries to her sternum.

He pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and breach of a suspended sentence order.

The court heard the relationship is now over.

Craig Sutcliffe, mitigating, said Warvill was sorry for what he had done and accepted he needed to address his drinking.

Mr Sutcliffe said Warvill is a self-employed hairdresser but is unable to work due to the pandemic.

Jailing Warvill, Recorder Mark McKone said: "I am sure you appreciate Mr Warvill that people who assault and bully their partner's must receive a prison sentence.

"This was domestic violence. You say you can't remember this incident because you say you had too much to drink.

"Alcohol is also an aggravating feature."

Warvill was made the subject of a restraining order banning him from contacting the victim for five years.
