Neville Wollerton was locked up for 12 months after pleading guilty to stalking his ex-wife and possessing a bladed article.

Leeds Crown Court heard Wollerton, 59, was overcome with jealousy after his 18-year marriage came to an end and she started a relationship with another man.

John Hobley, prosecuting, said the offending took place in November and December last year, six months after the former couple were divorced.

Mr Hobley said Wollerton was sent a police letter on November 17 advising him not to contact the victim after he kept turning up at her home unannounced.

The defendant ignored the advice and continue to turn up at her home in Normanton, Wakefield, and threatened violence.

During one incident Wollerton said to the woman: "Where does your boyfriend live? I will find out.

"I walk past here six times a day. First I will start on his car then I will start on him."

The victim filmed the incident on her mobile phone.

Wollerton approached his former wife in the street on December 19 and showed her a picture of a knife on his mobile phone.

He then said to her: "I have got a present for your boyfriend.

"I am going to slit his jugular and it will all be over."

Days later Wollerton walked into her home armed with a hunting knife.

The prosecutor said: "She was petrified and managed to take the knife from Mr Wollerton and fled the address and went to a neighbour."

Wollerton, of Church Lane, Normanton, went to the neighbour's house and threatened to kick the door down as he demanded the return of the knife.

Mr Hobley read a victim statement to the court on behalf of the woman in which she described suffering from anxiety as a result of the offending.

Andrew Stranex, mitigating, Wollerton had been abusing alcohol and was struggling to cope with the end of the relationship.

He said: "This is a very sad case because the defendant was with his ex-wife for a very long time.

"It is absolutely essential that I tell you from him that at no stage at all would he have hurt his ex-wife.

"He was at pains to tell the police that time and again."

Mr Stranex said Wollerton now accepted that the relationship was over and he planned to move away from the area upon his release from prison.

Jailing Wollerton, Judge Mushtaq Khokhar said: "This has had a profound effect on your former wife."
