The woman managed to obtain a non-molestation order against Ali six months prior to the incident.

Ms Brady said the victim was walking with a friend along Harehills Road, near to the Baba Jaga convenience store, when she heard the defendant shouting abuse at her.

Ali got off the scooter he had been riding and approached her.

The 21-year-old forced the woman up against a wall and said: "S**g, I am going to kill you."

The woman's friend tried to stop the attack but Ali was too strong for her.

Ali continued to shout abuse about the woman and her new partner before leaving.

Police were contacted and the defendant was arrested the next day.

He denied being in the Harehills area at the time of the incident.

Ali, of Nowell Terrace, Harehills, pleaded guilty to making threats to kill and breaching a non-molestation order.

Shila Whitehead, mitigating, said: "He accepts that he was wrong behaving in the way that he did."

The barrister added: "He is a young man with a limited record.

"This is a young man who needs help to get on the straight and narrow."

The court heard Ali had been in custody for more than six months since he was arrested.

Judge Geoffrey Marson QC agreed to impose a suspended prison sentence because of the length of time Ali has already spent in prison on remand.

Ali was given an 18-month sentence, suspended for two years.

He was also ordered to complete 32 rehabilitation activity requirement days.

The judge told Ali: "You have a history of jealousy.

"I make it clear to you now that your relationship is over."
