The 26-year-old defendant sent the woman text messages stating that he was going to smash the car up and set it on fire.

He also warned her not to drive the vehicle with their children in it.

Bashir Ahmed, prosecuting, said the defendant carried out the attack when he saw her in the car on February 28 this year.

Mr Ahmed said: "He grabbed her and put her to the floor.

"He tried to prise the car keys from her hand with such force that two of her fingernails came off.

"There was a great deal of blood and pain as a result."

Stancill managed to take the keys and tried to drive off in the vehicle but the woman fought with him.

During the struggle she was struck in the face with the keys and suffered a cut to her right eye.

The prosecutor continued: "When he realised that he had injured her he apologised and handed the keys back to her."

Stancill then kicked the vehicle and caused a dent which cost £500 to repair.

Police were contacted and officers went to Stancill's home to arrest him.

Stancill persuaded the officers not to place him in handcuffs as his children were there and he did not want them to be upset.

The officers agreed and took the defendant and the children to their grandmother's house so she could look after the youngsters while Stancill was taken into custody.

Mr Ahmed said Stancill ran from the police car when they arrived at the grandmother's address.

He managed to get away and made a phone call to the grandmother, telling her to ask the victim to drop the charges against him.

Police rang Stancill back on the phone and he agreed to hand himself in an hour later.

Stancill, of Chequers Close, Pontefract, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, criminal damage and escape.

The court heard he pleaded guilty to the offences at an early stage and was sorry for what he had done.

Stancill was given a ten-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months.

He was ordered to do 120 hours of unpaid work and take part in a 15-day rehabilitation activity requirement.

Stancill was also ordered to pay £500 costs.

Judge Andrew Stubbs QC said: "This was a defendant who was burning with rage with jealousy and anger and he boiled up when he saw her in a new car.

"He damaged the car and he damaged her."
