Jailed Leeds thug got a black eye when victim fought back and hit him with mobile phone as he attacked her with bottle and bit her in domestic attack

A violent boyfriend who hit his girlfriend with a bottle and bit her during a vicious New Year's Day attack has been jailed for more than three years.

Egzon Miftari also threatened to kill his victim and held a kitchen knife to her throat during the attack at her home in Seacroft, Leeds.

Leeds Crown Court heard the 21-year-old has previous convictions for domestic violence against members of his own family, including his parents.

Miftari attacked his partner in the early hours of New Year's Day this year after the couple had been drinking.

Andrew Petterson, prosecuting, said they had spent the previous evening with friends at a house in Meanwood before returning to Seacroft in the early hours of the morning.

Mr Petterson said the couple argued in the street before Miftari struck the woman with a bottle he had been drinking from.

She ran to her home nearby and tried to ring her dad.

Miftari knocked on the door and demanded some of his property back.

He was allowed in but continued to be violent and threatening towards her.

He then forced her onto a bed and pinned her down.

Mr Petterson said Miftari continued to choke her and she struggle to breathe.

The victim struck out at Miftari to defend herself.

She had a mobile phone in her hand at the time and the device struck him in the face, causing a black eye.

The woman told Miftari she was ringing her dad for help.

He bit her on the back as she tried to make the call.

Miftari said "I will kill you" and got a knife from the kitchen.

The woman barricaded herself into the bedroom but Miftari managed to force his way inside.

She rang her dad but Miftari grabbed the phone and ended the call.

He continued to make threats to kill her.

The prosecutor said: "At some point thereafter there was a knock at the door and the defendant put the phone down.

"It was the victim's father.

"The defendant left the address by jumping out of the window of the property.

"The defendant subsequently sent the victim messages apologising for what took place.

"The matter was reported to the police and the defendant was arrested."

Miftari, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to two offences of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, making threats to kill and breach of a restraining order.

He has previous convictions for assaulting his parents and harassing another relative.

Miftari was given a suspended prison sentence in April 2019 for assaulting the woman.

Eddison Flint, mitigating, said it was accepted that Miftari would receive a significant prison sentence because of his criminal record.

He said: "There is no defence. The defendant is completely and utterly ashamed as to how he has behaved with his partner.

"Perhaps for the first time he realises and accepts that the alcohol problems in his life is a fundamental problem for him and he needs to seek help for it."

Miftari was jailed for three and a half years.

He was also made the subject of a restraining order banning him from contacting the victim for ten years.
