West Yorkshire Police said in a statement yesterday that the other pedestrian "avoided the vehicle and walked away from the scene" and that they were trying to trace him as a significant witness to the incident.

He was described as a white, aged in his late forties or early fifties and was wearing a brown fur deerstalker hat, a black jacket with grey piping on the zips, light blue jeans and beige shoes. He was carrying a white carrier bag.

“The police car hit a 71-year-old woman, a pedestrian, on Roseville Road. She is currently being treated in hospital, where her condition is described as serious. A second pedestrian is also thought to have been hit by the police car but left the scene shortly after; it’s unclear if he’s been injured, the force is seeking to trace that person to check his welfare.

“Our independent investigation is under way; we sent investigators to the scene and attending the post incident procedures. The next steps are to obtain initial statements from the two officers involved and any witnesses to the incident.”
