Dewsbury Neighbourhood Policing Team has warned parents that they could receive points on their own license if they let their children ride e-scooters.

In a Facebook post, the team said: "E-scooter seized in Dewsbury town centre after ignored warning for lawful use.

"Please be aware that these are mechanically propelled vehicles not currently legal to use on roads or public places without the correct license or insurance.

"Parents providing these to children can risk their own licenses by causing or permitting the document offences."

It is illegal to use e-scooters in spaces that are set aside for use by pedestrians, cyclists, and horse-riders; this includes on the pavement and in cycle lanes.

E-scooters can only be used on public roads if the rider complies with a number of legal requirements.

According to Gov.UK, this includes insurance; conformity with technical standards and standards of use; payment of vehicle tax, licensing, and registration; driver testing and licensing; and the use of relevant safety equipment.
