'A heart of gold': Tributes to mum killed alongside her dog in house fire

Tributes have been paid to a mum who perished in a fatal house fire. The woman, named locally as Carol Padgett, is said to have "had a heart of gold".

Carol, 58, tragically died alongside her Jack Russell pooch in the fire-infested home she shared with 62-year-old partner Peter Mosey.

Firefighters already arrived to the semi-detached property when it was "well-alight" as five crews battled the blaze in Staincross, near Barnsley, on Friday evening (March 17)

An investigation into how the fire started is still on-going - but neighbours revealed the charred property feels suspicious, saying the house was "over-grown and messy".

A neighbour on the street in New Road said: "I knew Carol lived at the property, I didn't know her name, but I knew her to look at.

"As soon as the fire was put out all the crime scene investigators got in there.

"You couldn't even see the house - I think there was definitely something suspicious going on about it."

The blaze is currently being treated 'unexplained' until further tests are carried out.

The neighbour continued: "I knew that Carol smoked, because I used to see her walking past with the dog.

"I think everyone in the close knew about that dog because it was always yapping and going on all the time.

"The lights were left on in the house all the time - it shines into my back garden."

The neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, added: "Nothing like this happens on here, but it is shocking."

Five engines attended the incident with crews from Barnsley, Tankerley, Dearne and Cudworth. and an Yorkshire Air Ambulance was later called to the scene.

Neighbours said Peter Mosley, who had lived at the property for three decades, "kept himself - to himself" and confirmed Carol had moved in two years ago.

A statement later released by Carol's 34-year-old son Lee Padgett said: "My mum was a very quiet person, who kept herself to herself and had a heart of gold, raised us well and will be sadly missed.

"This has come as a shock to us all and we would ask for our privacy at this time."

A joint police and fire service investigation into the cause of the blaze continues.

Following the incident on Friday evening, South Yorkshire fire service tweeted: "Sadly, a woman has died following a serious house fire in Barnsley this evening."

They added: "Firefighters were called to the incident on New Road, Staincross at around 5:49pm this evening (Friday)."
