Fire on Leeds industrial estate sends plume of thick black smoke into the sky

The blaze broke out on the Newhold Industrial Estate in Garforth at about 12.15pm on Sunday, April 26.

An industrial unit and shipping container were on fire.

About 50 per cent of an 20 metre by 20 metre area was on fire.

Four pumps were sent to the scene.

Two breathing apparatus, two horse reels and two large jets were used to put out the blaze.

A West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue service log said: "Industrial unit and shipping container on fire.

"20m x 20m, 50 per cent involved.

"Large volume of paint and cylinders involved. 2 breathing apparatus, 2 hose reel’s and 2 large jets were used.

Councillor Mark Dobson, Garforth & Swillington ward (Independent), advised people in the area to keep their windows and doors closed.

Coun Dobson said: "Obvious thing to say but until it’s established what is actually burning if you live in the locality keep doors and windows closed.

"Also, please avoid the A642 area to allow the emergency services to do their work."
