Players from an amateur rugby league team were among five men arrested after a brawl broke at the Xscape leisure complex near Castleford.

Police patrolling the attraction in Glasshoughton were alerted to reports of fighting on the first floor at Xscape just before midnight on Saturday.

The violence escalated and more officers were drafted in along with handlers and police dogs.

The trouble allegedly involved a number of players from an amateur rugbty league club – who were on a night out at Xscape – before other revellers are understood to have become involved in the fighting.

Police and Xscape managers took the decision to close Xscape early in the interests of public safety.

Four men aged 19, 22, 23 and 25 were arrested on suspicion of affray in connection with the incidents and later released on police bail pending further enquiries.

A 23-year-old man arrested for being drunk and disorderly was handed a fixed penalty notice.

The YEP understands a number of amateur RL players from a club - which we cannot name for legal reasons - were on a night out when trouble flared.

A source close to the club involved told the YEP: “A lot of people were involved in the fight, it wasn’t just the rugby team. It wasn’t a rugby team do. The were out with other people that aren’t rugby players.”

He added: “I certainly know two of those arrested play for (the rugby club.) As far as I’m concerned it was a group of players out on a night out. It wasn’t anything to do with the rugby team.”

Xscape marketing manager Dan Wharton declined to comment on Saturday’s incident.

A spokeswoman for West Yorkshire Police said: “We have officers on patrol at Xscape who were alerted to reports of a fight. While it was being dealt with by officers there were further incidents of disorder and it required more officers to attend.”

Witnesses, or anyone with information, are asked to contact police by calling 101.
