How police responded to the body being found

A body of a man found under the disused railway bridge just off Whitehall Road in the city centre was first reported to British Transport Police at around 12pm today (Tuesday).

West Yorkshire Police, British Transport Police and the ambulance service attended the scene and he has since been pronounced dead.

Four police cars and an ambulance response vehicle attended the scene, with a cordon has been put in place across several of the arches.

The body of the man is to be moved this evening.

‘We called an ambulance and waited for the paramedics’

A surveyor assessing the viaduct site for future development discovered the man just after 11.30am today and asked Mohammed Maroof, the head of security at nearby office building Number One Leeds to help check on the man's welfare.

"He called me over as I have a key to the site and we both had a look around. He was lying at the back of an arch and we both shouted to him, but he didn't respond.

We were scared to get too close - we could see his skin was really pale. We called an ambulance and waited for the paramedics, who said straight away that he was dead.”

The man's identity has not yet been confirmed, however it is understood that the man was not a rough sleeper and the man's death is not being treated as suspicious.Statement from West Yorkshire Police

Statement from West Yorkshire Police: "At 11:56am today (11/12), police were contacted by a member of the public who had found the body of a man near to the disused railway viaduct behind the Yorkshire Post building in Whitehall Road, Leeds.
