Police arrived at the church shortly after 9am on Tuesday following a call by the ambulance service.

A man had been found collapsed outside the church on Butcher Lane, police said.

The man, aged in his 70s, was treated at the scene by paramedics.

He was taken to hospital and pronounced dead a short time later.

The death is currently being treated as unexplained and enquiries are being carried out to establish the circumstances.

Emergency services remain at the scene, police confirmed.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: "At 9.10am today (5/1) police were contacted by the ambulance service who were attending Butcher Lane, Rothwell, where a man had been found collapsed outside Rothwell Methodist Church.

"The man, aged in his 70s, was treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.

"The death is currently being treated as unexplained and enquiries are being carried out to establish the circumstances.

"A scene remains in place."
