A drunk woman broke a barmaid’s nose during an attack in a gastropub after she was told to leave for eating another customer’s dessert.

Jessica O’Rourke punched the staff member in the face during a drunken rage at the Bay Horse pub, Kirk Deighton, near Wetherby, in a drunken rage

Leeds Crown Court heard the 35-year-old went to the pub on May 9 last year at 1.30pm.

Heather Gilmore, prosecuting, said the barmaid served O’Rourke a glass of white.

The two women did not know each other put spoke.

At one point the victim comforted O’Rourke when she became upset.

Miss Gilmore said the victim returned to doing her work but later heard a disturbance.

There was a row between O’Rourke and a male customer after she ate his pudding when he left his table.

Miss Gilmore said the staff member spoke to O'Rourke about her behaviour and asked her to leave.

O'Rourke refused to leave and the victim warned her that she was going to ring the police.

As she was dialling 999 O'Rourke approached her and called her a "stupid fat f****** b****" and punched her on the nose.

O'Rourke also grabbed the woman's hair and continued to shout and swear.

Miss Gilmore said O'Rourke went to sit down after the assault but was so drunk she slid off her chair.

The victim suffered a broken nose and had to have an operation to have it straightened.

In a statement to the court, she described how she has suffered from anxiety and flashbacks.

The prosecutor said: "Her greatest fear is seeing the defendant again."

The victim's statement continued: "I want the woman who assaulted me to know that it is unacceptable.

"Her actions and behaviour affected my life and my family."

O'Rourke, of Ainsty Crescent, Wetherby, pleaded guilty to assault.

She has a previous conviction for assault.

Abigail Langford, mitigating, said O'Rourke had a drink problem which she had been receiving support for.

Miss Langford said the defendant was sorry for what she had done and has stayed away from alcohol since the incident.

She said O'Rourke was a Co-op worker and was being supported by her employer.

O'Rourke was given a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years.

She was also made the subject of an electronically-monitored curfew for two months.

The defendant was also ordered to pay £500 compensation to the victim and complete 20 rehabilitation activity requirement days.

Judge Geoffrey Marson, QC, said: "It was a wholly unprovoked attack upon a person who was simply trying to go about their work and was at one stage sympathetic towards you

"It was a terrible thing to do."
