Driver mounted pavements and drove wrong way on roundabouts in south Leeds after police filmed him slumped at the wheel of his car

A driver put lives in danger when he drove the wrong way around roundabouts, mounted pavements and reached double the speed limit during a police chase.

Lee Brook sped off after police found him slumped at the wheel of his car with drug taking material in his lap and used a body camera to film him

Leeds Crown Court heard officers approached Brook in his Saab car in a cul-de-sac on Sussex Place, Hunslet, and tapped on the window.

Howard Shaw, prosecuting, said Brook looked at the officers before revving his engine and reversing at speed.

Brook then drove dangerously four around four miles through Hunslet, Belle Isle and Beeston before abandoning the car.

The court heard Brook reached double the 30mph speed limit on Pepper Road and Woodhouse Hill Drive.

The 37-year-old mounted a pavement on East Grange Drive before braking to avoid a collision with another vehicle at a junction..

One of the officers got out of the the police car and used a glass hammer to smash the rear window of Brook's car.

Brook managed to drive away again. He went the wrong way on roundabouts on Old Run Road and at junction five of the M621.

He then joined the motorway and drove in the hard shoulder before exiting at Belle Isle and driving in the wrong direction on Moor Road.

Cars had to stop to avoid a collision as he went through red lights on Dewsbury Road in Beeston during the incident in February last year.

The officers decided to end the pursuit when he mounted a pavement near the junction with Colwyn Road because of the risk to members of the public.

Brook abandoned the car a short time later.

He was arrested a month later when he was recognised by police as he was in a car on Balm Road, Hunslet.

Brook, of Royal Court, Hunslet,pleaded guilty to dangerous driving.

He has previous convictions for burglary, drug offences and driving while disqualified.

Shila Whitehead, mitigating, said: "He fully accepts that his driving was not up to standard, and I put that mildly.

"He accepts that he is going to go to prison."

Brook was jailed for 15 months.

He was also banned from driving for four years and seven months.

Judge Andrew Stubbs QC said: "You took off and drove as far and as fast as you could until your driving was so bad and so dangerous that police had to abandon the pursuit so nobody was seriously hurt or killed."
