The occupants called the police due to concerns the man was potentially looking for their 12 week old puppy, who was inside the home.

Police said the dog was not stolen during the incident.

However, West Yorkshire Police in Wakefield said owners should be "extra vigilant".

A statement posted on Facebook said: "Dog owners be extra vigilant.

"Yesterday we received a report of a suspicious activity at a property within the Wakefield district.

"Occupants of a property in the Knottingley area received a knock on the door from a male claiming to be there to check their broadband connection.

"No arrangements had been made for this to take place so entry was refused. Whilst the male was on the doorstep he was seen to lean in to the property and have a good look around.

"The occupants phoned the Police due to concerns that the male was possibly looking for their 12 week old puppy that was inside the premises.

"Please note, no dog was stolen during this incident and this message is just to remind all dog owners to be extra vigilant if you notice anyone acting in a suspicious manner near to you/your property."
