Callum Seddon took control of the victim's back account and isolated from her family members in the months before the attack.

Leeds Crown Court heard the woman had fluid on her lungs and serious bruising to her head and body after the attack on November 10 last year.

Glenn Parsons, prosecuting, said Seddon and the woman had been in a relationship for five years.

Mr Parsons said the defendant was described as a "jealous person" who would often wrongly accuse the woman of flirting with other men.

The prosecutor said the couple had separate bank accounts but Seddon had the victim's bank card and pin number and would use her money to control her.

On the night of the attack Seddon told the woman that he was going to self harm.

Seddon then accused the woman of having sex with the neighbour and slashed his wrists with a pizza cutter.

Emergency services were called but Seddon refused to get into an ambulance.

Police arrested him and took him to hospital.

Mr Parsons said Seddon was de-arrested at hospital and later discharged.

He became aggressive towards his partner when he returned home.

The 28-year-old grabbed her by the throat and squeezed until she was unable to breathe.

She was then pushed over a sofa and Seddon threw a table at her.

The woman was thrown against a wall and down a flight of stairs.

She was punched in the leg and struck over the head with a heavy ashtray.

The attack was reported to police the next day when the woman told a social worker about the incident.

Mr Parsons said: "She told the police that she was being controlled at times by the defendant.

"By controlling her bank account he was controlling her money. He isolated her from friends and family and told her she could not see them."

Seddon, of Broadlea Gardens, Bramley, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and controlling or coercive behaviour.

The court heard Seddon had been held on remand at HMP Leeds since November 14 last year.

A probation officer told the court that Seddon had been assessed as posing a high risk of harm to the victim and any future partners.

Shila Whitehead, mitigating, said the offences were committed at a time when Seddon's mental health had deteriorated and he was at a "low ebb".

Seddon was given a nine-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, and ordered to take part in 25 rehabilitation activity requirement days.

He was also made the subject of a restraining order banning him from contacting the woman or going near her home.

Seddon was also banned from writing derogatory comments about the victim on social media.

The Recorder of Leeds, Judge Guy Kearl QC, said he was imposing the suspended sentence due to the time Seddon had already spent in custody and to allow him to attend a programme to prevent him re-offending.
