A bogus council worker conned his way into an elderly woman’s house to steal her handbag.

The man, wearing a yellow jacket and carrying a clipboard and pen, knocked on the 87-year-old’s door on Otley Road, Yeadon, at about 1.35pm on Tuesday.

He claimed to be from the council and asked to check the electricity supply.

But after being allowed in he grabbed the victim’s handbag and ran off.

Det Sgt Stephen King said: “The victim was left shaken by the incident and I would like to hear from anyone who may have seen this man in the area or who has any information that could assist the investigation.

“We are also reminding people to be vigilant and not to allow strangers into their homes. Always ask to see their identification badge and contact the company they claim to work for. If you’re not certain they are genuine then keep them out and contact the police.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Leeds CID at Elland Road via 101 or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
