Career burglar given ‘good hiding’ over Leeds garage break-in

Gavin Shaw received a broken nose and other injuries after a neighbour spotted him carrying out the offence on Roper Lane, Pudsey, on April 15 this year.

Leeds Crown Court heard the owners of the property and left their home secured when they set off for work in the morning.

A wooden board had been secured in place over a garage window as it had been broken into shortly before the incident.

A neighbour caught Shaw using tools trying to remove the board at around 10.50am.

Shaw said sorry before running towards the neighbour and then threw punches,

The court heard the neighbour managed to overpower Shaw and forced him against a wall as he dialled 999.

The neighbour told the operator he had caught and burglar and given him a “good hiding”.

Shaw managed to push the neighbour away as he was on the phone and he ran away.

He returned him but was arrested a short time later. Shaw was out of prison on licence and subject to an electronically monitored tag at the time.

Shaw, 30,of Romney Mount, Pudsey, pleaded guilty to attempted robbery.

He has a long record for drug-related offending, including burglary.

He was then placed on a programme designed to help prolific offenders and had been making good progress.

Mr Waite said Shaw had found a job in the demolition industry but had returned to using cocaine after his partner of 16 years left him.

At the time of the offence he was spending £80 a day on the class A drug.

Shaw was made the subject of a 12-month community order during with he must take part in a drug rehabilitation requirement.

Mr Justice Males said: “I am giving you a chance that you were beginning to take and you need to understand that you do need to take that chance.”
