Body found in Rishworth reservoir after car crashes into water

UNDERWATER search teams have found the body of a man at Booth Wood Reservoir in Rishworth after reports of a car crashing into the water.

A large-scale operation got under way this morning to find the red car, which was reported to have left the road and entered the water around 8.20pm on Sunday, August 14.

Following a search operation by police and the fire service, the Underwater Search Unit today found the vehicle under the water.

A short time later, they located the body of a man, who was believed to be in his thirties.

Enquiries are continuing to determine the full circumstances of what took place. 

Sergeant Adrian Newman of the Safer Roads and Neighbourhoods Support Team West said: “The underwater search team were on site this morning and first located the vehicle, before the body of the deceased was recovered at 11.55am.

“The family have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers.”

Police closed Oldham Road and a scene was set up near the Turnpike Public House.

Road closures are in place from Junction 22 of the M62 to the turning circle at Rishworth School.

The closures are expected to remain in place throughout today (Monday).
