Arrest after members of public disarm knife-wielding man following car crash in Leeds

Police were called to reports of a crash on Larkhill Road in Leeds which then 'escalated' after a man was seen wielding a knife.

Officers said members of the public had to remove a knife from a man following the crash on January 23.

A 25-year-old man was arrested following the incident and he was charged with: driving a motor vehicle without third party insurance, drive a motor vehicle otherwise than in accordance with a license and possess a controlled drugs namely cannabis, West Yorkshire Police confirmed.

A tweet from the West Yorkshire Police Operation Jemlock account said: "23rd January, #OpJemlock officers attend a report of an RTC on Larkhill Close in Leeds.

"It had escalated and resulted in members of the public disarming a 25yo male of the pictured knife.

"Arrested and charged to court but could have had a very different ending."

Operation Jemlock was launched in April 2019 in a bid to tackle serious violent crime in the region.

On January 12, officers tweeted that they had made 5000 arrests since the operation began.

The tweet said: "So our first tweet of 2021 is another milestone for our team... 5000 arrests since #OpJemlock began in 2019.

"Very proud of all the officers who've brought their 'A' game and their skills to our operation to disrupt criminality in these difficult times."

In a separate incident this week, officers have also seized a huge blade after a foot chase following drug dealing reports in Beeston.

Police detained a suspect for suspected drug offences.
