13 arrests, cars seized over fuel scam gang operating in Leeds

Thirteen people have been arrested as part of an investigation into an alleged fuel scam in Leeds.

Motorists have reported being asked for money to buy petrol by eastern Europeans at various locations, including near to the Colton Retail Park.

According to police, the fraudsters claimed to have run out of fuel and said they would reimburse their victims.

In at least one instance, cheap jewellery has been offered in return.

On Thursday an elderly woman was putting shopping into her car when a man and a woman distracted her and stole goods.

Similar complaints have been made about incidents at the Xscape car park in Castleford.

A spokesman for the Leeds Outer East neighbourhood policing team said: "As a result of investigations, officers arrested 13 suspects, seized a large amount of property and recovered several vehicles believed to be involved in the scams."

Enquiries are ongoing.
