BATTLING Leeds youngster Toby Nye is set to be the star of the show when the countdown to Christmas gets under way in Crossgates.
Toby, who suffers from a rare form of cancer, has been picked to switch on the area’s festive lights at a celebration bash taking place next Friday, November 10.
Backed by Leeds City Council’s outer east community committee, the event is being held from 7pm to 8pm on Austhorpe Road and will feature a packed programme of entertainment.
Performers will include London-based rapper Mark Anthony and the choir from Manston Primary School. Revellers will also be treated to a spectacular fireworks display.
The switch-on has been organised by local councillor Pauleen Grahame and today she said: “This is a wonderful time of year and we are very proud to be able to deliver a free, festive event of this quality where the whole community can come together.”
Kippax’s Christmas lights celebration will be held outside the Co-op on High Street on Thursday, November 23.
Sponsored by Kippax Parish Council and the outer east community committee, the evening’s entertainment will start at 6pm, with the switch-on scheduled for 7.45pm.
Elsewhere in east Leeds, Garforth’s festive lights party is happening on Main Street on Friday, November 24. Marketplace-style stalls will open from 4pm as part of the build-up to the big switch-on.
n The Garforth and District Lions community bonfire will take place on Glebelands playing field this Friday.
The bonfire will be lit at 6.30pm with a fireworks display due to start at 7pm.
Attendees are asked not to bring their own fireworks or sparklers for safety reasons.
