City Buzz: New Venetian restaurant to open at Harvey Nichols in Leeds

A new Venetian restaurant is set to open at one of the swankiest spots in Leeds.

Restaurateur Russell Norman, who you may recognise from popular television show Saturday Kitchen, will bring his Venetian eatery Polpo to the city.

Opening in February 2016, the restaurant will be the first Polpo north of London, and will be located within Harvey Nichols on Briggate.

Polpo will take over the Yo Sushi site on the luxury store’s fourth floor, alongside the Harvey Nichols Fourth Floor Café and food market.

The menu is inspired by the rustic back-street wine bars of Venice and features small plates from the region of Veneto.

Luke Bishop, managing director of the restaurant group, which currently operates nine sites in London and one in Brighton, said: “We had our eyes on Leeds for a while, as it’s a vibrant city with an impressive restaurant scene, so it is very exciting to be working with Harvey Nichols and the Leeds store to launch Polpo’s first restaurant in the north.”



Dishes start at £3 and will include fried stuffed olives, zucchini arancini and fig and prosciutto crostini.

Small plates include cod cheeks with lentils and salsa verde, pizzetta with spicy pork and pickled peppers, deep fried polenta-crusted meatballs and sliced flank steak.

The dessert menu features flourless chocolate and hazelnut cake, blackberry panna cotta and tiramisu.

Leeds is flying the flag for the north with this latest addition, and hopefully other London-based eateries will follow Polpo’s lead and see the city as a leading dining destination.
