City Buzz: New pop-up art space at Leeds shopping centre

Leeds Art Gallery will host workshops and events at the space from 11am to 4pm every day during half term.

The first ‘Artspace’ event will see Trinity Leeds retailers donate waste items such as coat hangers and shop fittings to be transformed into works of art.

Councillor Judith Blake, leader of Leeds City Council, said: “This is a wonderful and creative way of taking art out into the city and giving people the chance to play a part in something different.

“It’s very important to us that culture is embedded in our city, not just in our galleries and museums but in everyday life, and activities like this are crucial in helping us to achieve that ambition.”

Dan Wharton, marketing manager at Trinity Leeds, said: “As well as boosting creativity, we hope the partnership will encourage shoppers and businesses to re-use and recycle their waste.”

Leeds Art Gallery closed last month for major repairs and isn’t due to re-open until Spring 2017, so this is a great way to make sure its presence is still felt in the city.
