City Buzz: Arts and '˜rave' space Freedom Mills launches in Leeds

THERE aren't many places in Leeds where you can enjoy a rave one weekend and soak up some art and culture the next.

But a new venue is planning to do just that.

Freedom Mills opens this weekend at Washington Street, just off Kirkstall Road.

After getting caught up in the Boxing Day floods, the venue is finally set for a big launch party on Sunday.

Founders Joshua Threlfall and Graham Dixon came up with the Freedom Mills concept.

While Graham planned to make it his own homage to fondly-remembered 1990s warehouse raves, Joshua wanted to use the space as an exhibition and event space.

The two visions merged to form a multi-purpose space on the outskirts of the city centre.

There are plans in the pipeline to host independent food and drink markets, music events and educational classes as well as art and creative displays and pop-up film and cinema evenings.

The launch will include an exhibition by Nicolas Dixon, who re-worked the logo for the 40th anniversary of the legendary brand Pacha.

It runs from 1pm on Sunday, February 28.
