Homeowners in Leeds are cashing in at Christmas – by renting out their spare parking spaces for money.
Savvy householders are making hundreds of pounds a year by charging city centre shoppers and workers to use their driveways or parking spots.
And, with an average income of £6.70 a day, the December rush for gifts could see them pocket more than £100 this month alone.
The website Just Park has 68 residents offering the service close to Leeds city centre, a third of whom signed up in the last year.
The company said bookings by people wanting to avoid the cost of using privately run car parks and council spaces in the city centre had trebled to more than 3,500 year-on-year.
It said its users had made £40,000 during that time – up 150 per cent on the previous year.
David Adsetts, who has regular customers using his driveway five minutes from the universities on Lavinia Grove in Woodhouse, said it was an easy way to make money.
The 42-year-old paralegal said: “It’s the most simple thing in the world.
“All I had to do was register my details and wait for the bookings.
“It’s mostly during term time that there’s demand, but there are very few days when I don’t have abooking.”
He said he made an average of about £60 a month from the service.
“I tend to use it as extra pocket money if I have a holiday coming up or something,” he added.
According to Just Park, Leeds has the eighth most expensive parking spaces in the country at an average charge of £16.20 per day.
Company founder, Anthony Eskinazi, said: “With public parking adding a significant cost to the Christmas shopping bill – and spaces especially hard to find at this busy time of year – it’s no surprise that drivers are looking for cheaper and more convenient alternatives.”
