The first pints will be pulled for customers at The Briggate next Tuesday, March 7, it has been announced.

A total of 60 jobs are being created with the opening of the pub, which stands on the site of the former Garforth Liberal Club on Main Street.

And manager Adam Harris cannot wait for drinkers to start getting acquainted with their new Wetherspoons.

Adam told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “Myself and my team are looking forward to welcoming customers into the pub and we are confident that it will be a great addition to the Garforth community.”

JD Wetherspoon says The Briggate will specialise in real ales as well as craft and world beers.

It will also be open for family dining with children welcome in the pub until 9pm throughout the week as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

The £1.9m redevelopment of the old liberal club was given planning permission last year.

Some residents had raised concerns about possible problems with noise and a lack of parking.

But there was support from other people in the town, with claims that a pub would help bring back the community spirit lost when the liberal club closed its doors in the summer of 2015.

The club was established in 1886, with Joseph Holmes as president and Robert Woods as secretary.

At that time, Main Street was known as Briggate – a name that derives from old Norse words meaning ‘the road leading to the bridge’.

The Briggate will tip its hat to Garforth’s proud past by displaying historic photos and information boards.
