Central Leeds: A new take on the work life balance

Working from home is about to take on a new meaning when an office and property developer launches its latest concept in Leeds.

The SoCity brand is coming from Prospect Property Group and, if planning permission is granted later this summer, the development will see co-living apartments for professionals complete with 24-hour concierge and security, cleaning and linen services, co-working hubs, communal coffee and social areas, a gym and cinema. The site at Lisbon Square will see a 23-storey development of 146 one, two and three bed apartments, which is being designed by Leeds-based architect Aspect Architecture.

Partner James Elliott said: “Young people, who can’t or don’t want to own their home want the convenience of a fully equipped, grown-up apartment without the up-front cost and time investment that comes with furnishing a home from scratch. They want free superfast WiFi, turnkey cable TV, and don’t want the hassle of dealing with various utilities.

“They also want the convenience of in-house services such as laundry and cleaning, and want to be around people of a similar age and interests. SoCity will provide all of this, and we expect demand for units will outstrip supply once the concept apartments are launched in 2019.”

Warren Hill, chairman of Prospect Property Group, said the project was inspired by a change in what young professionals want from accommodation when they start their working lives.”

A decision on SoCity is expected in September and work could begin in autumn.
