Carving out a piece of art at Leeds Roundhay Park

Leeds teacher and artist Shane Green has spent his weekday evenings and weekends crafting this giant tree in Roundhay Park into a natural wonder.

Over the weeks he has carefully carved sculptures of butterflies, spiders and animals into the tree taking inspiration from nearby Tropical World. And he is set to unveil his labour of love once he has put the finishing touches to his piece.

Mr Green told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “I was approached by the Friends of Roundhay Park, who said that they had this very old tree that had been there for about five years.

“They had seen some of my previous sculptures that I had done, and asked if I could carve a sculpture in this tree.”

The sculpture encompasses a variety of different animals from Tropical World. And at its highest point is a butterfly.

Shane hopes that he is close to finishing the sculpture within the next few weeks before it is unveiled on June 1.

He said: “I am putting pressure on myself to get it finished.

“But what I love about the carving is the nature aspect of it. I would love to take on another project like this, and hopefully try out other objects that I haven’t carved before.”
