Care homes and nursing services in West Yorkshire rank second worst in the country for meeting CQC standards

West Yorkshire’s care homes and nursing services have the second worst record in the country for meeting national standards, according to new research.

It has emerged that almost one in five facilities in the region has been rated as ‘requires improvement’ or worse by national health watchdog the Care Quality Commission.

Just 81 per cent of the 766 care and nursing services which have been inspected in the region meet national standards – a record worsened only by the Isle of Wight which has far fewer care facilities.

The figures compiled in a league table by trustedcare.co.uk, an online directory for reviewing care providers, show that around 10 per cent of care services in East, South and North Yorkshire require improvement.

Mark Walford, chief executive and founder of trustedcare.co.uk, said: “Although West Yorkshire currently ranks the second lowest counties for care services meeting CQC standards, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the majority of services are poor. Over 80 per cent of providers who have been rated are achieving a good standard, however this is poor compared to other counties.”

The research also shows that the area’s care homes and nursing services rank 19th out of the 47 regions, and reveals over 13,000 providers nationally are still awaiting inspections under the new CQC process launched in 2014.

Chris Day, CQC director of engagement, said: “It’s important that people have access to information that helps them to choose the right care for them or for someone they love.”
