Capital’s trendy burger joint set for Leeds launch

A new branch of the ultra-trendy London ‘burger, beer and cocktail’ restaurant that has taken the capital by storm is to open in Leeds city centre this Autumn.

MEATliquor’s new outlet at the Trinity Centre is its first in the North and is set to bolster the city’s growing reputation as a dining destination.

Bosses say MEATliquor Leeds, which will have a seating capacity of 125 and two bars across two floors when it opens on Bank Street, will “tap into the local market for the restaurant and menu design”.

It also the latest burger chain to arrive in the city, after the opening of Twisted Burger Company at the Aire Bar and with plans announced for a branch of Byron Hamburgers this summer.

A spokeswoman said the opening by founders Yianni Papoutsis and Scott Collins came after the success of a “pop-up” restaurant in Leeds last year. She said: “MEATliquor marks its territory up North, bringing its meat and booze-fuelled anarchy to Leeds city centre.

“With over 100 dishes on rotation, the menu at MEATliquor Leeds will exude nothing less than extreme eating, featuring many MEATliquor favourites whilst also offering more wings, more burgers and other new meaty revelations.”

The business started five years ago when Mr Papoutsis spent £3,000 on a burger van and started holding ‘burger parties’ in London which quickly developed a cult following. The company has since grown to three branches in London and Brighton, with another four planned, including a site in Bristol.

Mr Papoutsis and his business partner Mr Collins were named last year as one the 1,000 Most Influential People in London, while one website dubbed MEATliquor “London’s trendiest restaurant”.

The opening of MEATliquor is the latest addition to Leeds’s culinary scene which has seen it taken seriously as a top dining destination, according to a recent article in Olive magazine.

Food writer Tony Naylor, said: “The recent blossoming of the northern food scene is one of the most significant current trends in UK food.

“Historically, northerners had to travel to London to eat truly modern food but in the last year that’s changed radically.

“Where food and drink are concerned, Liverpool, Leeds and Manchester are bouncing.”
