Generous readers have already begun to show their backing for an ambitious YEP campaign to help revolutionise cancer support in Yorkshire.
Hundreds of readers have shared and liked our stories revealing how a new £5million Maggie’s Yorkshire centre could change the lives of families affect by cancer in our region after we launched the A Million for Maggie’s campaign last week.
Meanwhile dozens have put their hands in their pockets to help make the dream a reality by sending cheques and donating by text as we aim to raise £1million towards the cost of the centre, which will offer free support in an innovative home-from-home form.
During the launch of the campaign, Maggie’s Yorkshire was also boosted by a £12,550 donation from the Yorkshire Rows - a team of Yorkshire mums who rowed the Atlantic earlier this year in aid of charities including Maggie’s.
We have revealed the stories of people already living with cancer and their hopes for a Maggie’s facility in Yorkshire as well as tales of those already accessing the charity’s support either online or in person in other areas of the country.
Ben Feely, fundraising manager for Maggie’s Yorkshire, said: “From the first day we started to receive donations and phone calls from people wanting to get involved and help us to build the centre which is just incredible and more than I could have hoped for.
“Given the size of the fundraising target, we really need as many people as possible to get behind us and we could not have got off to a better start. Thank you so much to everyone who has already supported us.”
Maggie’s centres use professionally qualified staff to offer people with cancer an evidence-based programme of support including everything from psychological support and benefits advice to nutrition workshops, yoga, art therapy and stress management.
Maggie’s Yorkshire is among the latest projects in a portfolio of 19 centres at major NHS cancer hospitals in the UK, online and abroad, and is hoped to open at Leeds St James’s Hospital in 2017.
The £5million centre, designed by the acclaimed Heatherwick Studio, will feature a series of contained roof gardens and live by the principles of person-centred free support that the charity is founded upon.
The centre will compliment services already offered at the nearby Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre.
