Campaign to celebrate surveyors' achievements in Yorkshire

A campaign to commemorate the contributions that the surveying profession has made to shaping Yorkshire and Humber’s built and natural environment over the past 150 years has been launched.

As the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) celebrates 150 years in 2018 with its campaign, Pride in The Profession: Celebrating 150 years of surveying successes, it is calling on the wider surveying profession in Yorkshire and Humber to nominate local surveyors and surveying achievements in the region – both past and present.

Surveyors design, value and protect all the physical assets across the region – from historic stately homes and castles, including Castle Howard, Harewood House and Wentworth Castle, to our leisure and tourism attractions from beautiful parks, forests and grand hotels, to schools, sports stadiums, and even our road infrastructure.

Highlights of the just launched campaign include celebrating the first female chartered surveyor, Irene Barclay, who was a true champion of social housing reform in the twentieth century, and Derek Muldowney; the saviour of the Daytona 500. But smaller, carefully thought out initiatives that have had a huge impact on people’s lives will also be recognised.

Sean Tompkins, RICS CEO, (pictured), said: “Yorkshire and Humber’s chartered surveyors have made significant contributions to shaping the region’s built and natural environment and how it is lived, worked and played in over the last 150 years.

“The profession has helped society advance in a world that has seen huge new technological capability, rapid population growth and social shifts and has helped shape and deliver the cities in Yorkshire and Humber that reflect the needs of modern society.

"The contribution of the profession cannot be understated. We want our profession to join us in revealing the impact it has had on their region and wider society, and to recommend surveyors who have made a real contribution that can be celebrated throughout our 150th year.

"We want to capture these stories and incredible moments and use them to inspire the next generation of professionals who will eventually be handed the baton to shape Yorkshire and Humber.”
