Burberry has designs on helping Leeds flood victims

Now the firm has shown it also has a touch of class when it comes to giving something back to its local area.

It has made a £20,000 contribution to the Yorkshire Evening Post-backed Leeds Flood Relief Appeal, it was revealed today.

Its support follows the announcement that Burberry is setting up a new manufacturing and weaving factory on the city’s South Bank that will employ more than 1,000 people.

The commitment means the total raised by the flood appeal stands at an impressive £54,000.

Sally-Anne Greenfield, chief executive at the Leeds Community Foundation, which is co-ordinating the appeal, said: “Thanks to kind donations from organisations such as Burberry, we are continuing to raise money to support local people.

“The Leeds Flood Relief Appeal grants scheme is now open for applications. We are encouraging people to spread the word to ensure those who have been affected by the floods know they can access grants to replace damaged goods and provide emergency repairs.”

Boxing Day’s flooding was the worst seen in West Yorkshire for 70 years, with around 1,700 homes and 500 businesses hit in Leeds alone.

Cheques made out to Leeds Community Foundation Flood Appeal can also be posted to Leeds Flood Appeal, Leeds Community Foundation, First Floor, 51a St Paul’s Street, Leeds LS1 2TE.

Individual grants of up to £250 are available along with community grants of up to £2,000.

Applicants are also asked to give full details of their losses so that larger grants may be considered, if funds permit.

Priority will be given to households with children, older people or those with physical or learning disabilities.
