Britpop stars set sail for summer show in Leeds

Ocean Colour Scene today announced a show in Millennium Square on Saturday, July 23, to mark the 20th anniversary of the release of their Moseley Shoals album.

The Birmingham band will be performing the album in full on a day that will feature support from another two of Britpop’s main players in the shape of Shed Seven and The Bluetones.

And with more names still to be announced for the bill, the event seems sure to be a noteworthy celebration of the period in the mid-1990s when a crop of young homegrown guitar groups ruled the airwaves.

Ian De-Whytell, boss of Leeds-based Crash Records, told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “It’s a really well put together line-up which will get a lot of people very excited.

“Moseley Shoals is a classic album and it will be good to hear it played live in full.

“Shed Seven and The Bluetones are guaranteed to get the crowd going before that. It should be a great day in Millennium Square.”

Moseley Shoals spawned hit singles such as The Riverboat Song and The Day We Caught The Train.

Three shows taking place this month in relatively small venues in Birmingham, London and Glasgow to celebrate the album’s anniversary sold out in a matter of seconds.

York-based Shed Seven’s best-known tracks include Chasing Rainbows, Where Have You Been Tonight? and Going For Gold while the Bluetones back catalogue boasts top tunes like Slight Return, Cut Some Rug and Bluetonic.

Tickets for the Leeds concert go on sale at 10am this Friday. They are available from Lunatickets.co.uk, the city centre box office at the Carriageworks and Crash and Jumbo record stores.

Other bands who have played Millennium Square over the years include Embrace, Snow Patrol, The Specials and local heroes Kaiser Chiefs.
