At around 2pm, Derbyshire Police tweeted that a small plane had crashed at Summerley Road, near Summerley Airfield, in Apperknowle.
They revealed that one person had been injured in the crash and that the surrounding roads had been closed.
However, police have now revealed that the pilot, who was the only person in the plane at the time, died of his injuries.
The Air Accidents Investigation Branch has sent a team to the site and roads around the incident remain closed.
Speaking at the scene, DCI Darren De'ath, on call leading investigator, said a 'light aircraft' came down in a field.
He added: "There was a single occupant within the light aircraft.
"It would appear the plane was due to land.
"We don't yet know the cause of the crash.
"We're now about to start a joint investigation with the Civil Aviation Authority, who are en route to the scene."
A Derbyshire Constabulary spokesman said emergency services were called to the incident at around 1pm.
Anyone with information is urged to call police on 101.
