Boxer Adams wins yet another ‘title’

Adams became Britain’s first ever female boxing Olympic medallist when she took the gold medal by beating the Chinese great and world number one Ren Cancan to win the 51kg flyweight title at the London games.

Before that fight she was largely unknown but is now a household name and a VIP in her own right.

Adams, who was born in Leeds and educated at Agnes Stewart High School in Burmantofts, won her first bout at 13 but struggled to find other girls to box.

In 2001 she became the first female boxer to represent England.

Since winning gold the 30-year-old reached the shortlist of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

Her beaming smile won her many fans and she went on to meet one of her heroes, Sugar Ray Leonard.

“This medal has opened the door to so many opportunities,” she said this week.
