FIREFIGHTERS are tackling a huge blaze in Castleford town centre.

Crews were called to Wesley Street at around 2.30pm today (Sun, March 16) and were still in attendance at 6pm.

According to reports on Twitter, some high street shops had to close early due to the smoke.

A spokeswoman for West Yorkshire and Rescue said a large, three-storey building was involved in the fire, which affected around 80 per cent of the ground floor.

It is understood that the building is used for furniture sales and a taxi firm.

Firefighters attended the scene from Castleford, Pontefract, Garforth and Rothwell, and specialist equipment was also used to tackle the blaze.
