The big wheel, from funfair specialists Roger Tuby & Son, was formally opened by the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Coun Gerry Harper.

He said: “It was fantastic to be at the official opening of the big wheel on Victoria Gardens, which will offer great views of the city centre and something for all the family to enjoy as we approach the festive season.”

The wheel, a new addition to the company’s repertoire, first came to Leeds at this year’s Valentine’s Day festival.

Roger Tuby said the ride included “a magnificent set of SMD lights that look like a fireworks display”.

Following last night’s opening, the big wheel will be accessible to the public until the Christmas market draws to a close on Sunday December 18.
