Big day out at Leeds children's festival for brave cancer survivor

A six-year-old who has been treated for cancer will enjoy a special day out at a children's festival which is helping to save lives.

Joseph Mayman and his family are looking forward to Geronimo, which takes place on Sunday and Monday at Harewood House in Leeds.

The event – which is backed by the Yorkshire Evening Post – will support Cancer Research UK Kids and Teens, which funds research into cancers affecting young people.

Joseph’s dad Dave, from Horsforth, said: “Joseph coped with months of treatment with unbelievable bravery, strength and resilience, despite all the things he was missing out on while he was ill.

“We are all so excited about going to the Geronimo festival. Now he’s well again, it means a lot to us as a family to spend time together and do fun things like this.”

Joseph was diagnosed with advanced neuroblastoma in 2012 after developing a black eye, stomach aches and leg pains. Scans revealed tumours behind both eyes, but also that the cancer had spread to other parts of his body.

He underwent three months of chemotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy, further chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant.

After finishing his treatment in 2013, he is currently cancer-free.

The youngster, along with his sister Eve, four, will enjoy a host of entertainment at Geronimo, including performances from children’s TV favourites such as Justin Fletcher and live theatre shows.

Dave, 36, added: “The Geronimo festival is such a fun way to support a good cause, so we hope our story will inspire festival goers to support Cancer Research UK Kids and Teens, because it’s thanks to research that Joseph is here today.”
