Become a donor superhero with Leeds Rhinos at Easter derby match

Rugby league fans attending the derby match between the Rhinos and Wakefield Trinity Wildcats at Headingley Carnegie Stadium on Monday will be encouraged to sign up to the NHS Organ Donor Register.

The family fun day with a superhero theme will see the Be A Hero campaign’s mascot make a half-time pitch appearance, while a range of family activities take place and supporters are helped to sign the register on the day.

Around 42,000 Yorkshire residents signed the register within the first five months of Be A Hero, which is organised by Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (LTH).

Leeds Rhinos’ captain Danny McGuire said: “We can all be somebody’s hero – each and everyone one of us has the potential to save up to nine lives by donating our organs when we die.

“Equally, we can all find ourselves in the position where we too need a hero.”

Be A Hero launched after it emerged that just 29 Leeds families donated organs in 2014 as around 800 people in the county awaited crucial transplants.

Currently only one in three people in Yorkshire are on the organ donor register, which allows you to state your wish that you would like to donate your organs to others after death and takes just minutes to join online or over the phone.

Dr Simon Flood, a clinical lead for organ donation at LTH, said; “We hope the Be A Hero campaign will go some way to ensuring that, in time, everyone who needs an organ in Yorkshire will get one.”
