Army bomb disposal carry out controlled explosion in Leeds street

Police have carried out a controlled explosion in a Leeds street today.

Police were called to Elford Place West in Harehills, Leeds to carry out a drugs raid.While there, officers found a suspicious item. Two men were arrested on suspicion of drugs offences.

A cordon was put in place and more than 60 properties in the area were then evacuated.

Army specialists then attended to carry out a controlled explosion.

The wider cordon has now been lifted but one remains in place on Elford Place West itself at this time while forensic examination of the scene is carried out.

The council’s emergency planning team was contacted to put appropriate measures in place to support the evacuated residents during the incident.

Chief Inspector Ian Croft, who heads neighbourhood policing in north-east Leeds, said:
