Sara Djoudi, from Potternewtown, was first diagnosed with the tumour aged 14, but was successfully treated in the United States.

But when she underwent a scan last year after suffering headaches, doctors told her the tumour had returned and there was nothing they could do.

Now friends and family have rallied round to support the Newcastle University law student.

Close friend Natasha O’Brien began a funding website to support Sara and her family through her illness last week - and in just five days it has raised £9,355.

Natasha, 39, said: “It’s overwhelming how much money has been raised. We’re just blown away. Our original target was £5000, and it shows that Sara is a much loved young lady.

“She’s just amazing and she’s still laughing. Her mum has been keeping her informed about the fund and she’s over the moon.”

The website says: “If you have had the pleasure of ever meeting Sara, then you will know first hand just how awesome this girl truly is. She brightens up any room.”

Sara’s university career has been cut short, and while she was offered a place at the University of Leeds to carry on with her studies, her current health makes it impossible.

The money raised will give Sara as comfortable a life as possible, and will allow her mum Angela Shortreed to take time off work to care for her.
