It won't get done by itself. Father and son Edward and Joseph Smith are the ones adding extra shine to this year's Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate.

The pair have the task of applying the polish to more than 220 trophies which will be awarded to the winners of the competition classes at the 158th show next week.

Great Yorkshire Show trophy manager Edward and his 25-year-old student son have just seven days left to make sure the silver is up to scratch. The show opens on Tuesday, July 12 and continues until Thursday, July 14 during which time victors in the show rings will hold aloft their prizes in front of crowds which are expected to top 130,000 over the three days.

He said: “Our job is to not only get them back from last year’s winners, but to make sure they are all polished and ready, and in the correct show rings, at the right time, to be handed out to this year’s winners.”

This year’s show is extra special for farmer Charles Mills, who will act as show director for the first time.
